This prestigious collection comes to Iron Gate from a revered connoisseur and long-time wine collector. Lover of American wines, he spent many years sourcing them from some of the USA's finest properties and had them stored professionally at 55 Degrees in Napa Valley. Recognizing his cellar had grown far beyond what he could reasonably consume, he's brought the wines to auction to share with fellow enthusiasts.
The tasting note for 1988 Joseph Drouhin Bonnes Mares Grand Cru is from John Gilman and the score is 93 - The 1988 Drouhin Bonnes-Mares is further along its evolutionary path than the '88 Griotte from Joseph Drouhin, and though it still has a fair bit of acidity on the finish, the wine has opened up considerably more on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is stunning, offering up a quintessential Bonnes-Mares blend of plums, black cherries, singed heather, earth, venison, mustard seed, coffee and a bit of charred wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied and quite opulent on the attack, with a great core of fruit, melting tannins, great focus, and a very long, complex and tangy finish. Much like the '88 Griotte, there is almost a spike of acidity popping out on the finish, which keeps the score down just a bit. If it fully resolves over time, this will be a reference point bottle of Drouhin Bonnes-Mares.
